Your journey begins with a scenic drive across the Haouz plains, heading west toward the Atlantic coast. Halfway through the drive, you’ll make a relaxing stop in Chichaoua, a small village perfect for enjoying a coffee before continuing on.
As you get closer to Essaouira, you’ll pass through the iconic Argan tree region, and if you’re lucky, spot the famous goats climbing the trees! Take a moment for photos, then stop at a women-run Argan oil cooperative to learn how this precious oil, known as Morocco’s “liquid gold”, is transformed into fine cosmetic products using traditional techniques.
Upon arriving in Essaouira, your time is entirely yours to explore at your own pace. The city’s layout is simple and welcoming, with wide, organized streets, unlike the maze-like medinas found elsewhere in Morocco. Most visitors find it easy (and enjoyable) to explore without a guide, but should you prefer one, your driver can help arrange a local expert.
Start your visit at the historic harbor, where colorful fishing boats line the docks and old Portuguese fortifications stand watch over the ocean. You'll see original cannons facing the Atlantic, offering a glimpse into the city's military past.
Next, dive into the UNESCO-listed Medina, a charming old town with 18th-century walls, vibrant artisan shops, and the iconic Skala de la Ville, once used to defend the city against invaders. From there, walk through Bab Laalouj, one of the main city gates, and explore the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter rich in culture and history.
Browse Essaouira’s many art galleries, woodcraft boutiques, and souvenir shops, then stop at a cozy local café for a fresh seafood lunch, the town is renowned for its daily catch.
If time allows, enjoy a stroll along the beach of Mogador. Watch locals playing football on the sand or try your hand at a friendly match. Or simply unwind while watching kite surfers and windsurfers dance across the waves.
As the sun begins to set, you’ll make your way back to Marrakech, where your private tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel or riad.
